Often the presence or mentioning of a gun results in the criminal reconsidering their actions.

http://hematite.com/dragon/Lott_ORDu.html

You mention no problem with ownership of guns per se, but then make an unfounded blanket statement regarding handguns.

You state "especially when that instrument’s sole purpose is to shoot, injure and possibly kill another human being, even in defense. This is the only use for handguns." Really? How about the millions of Americans who legally and responsibly use HANDguns for target shooting, plinking, varmint control, hunting (including big game such as deer and boar) along with the obvious use for self defense.

Would you have handguns banned and rifles found acceptable? People wonder why gun advocates argue the "slippery slope" argument, but look at where more "lenient" bans ended up in England and Australia.

Also, "This myth of redemptive violence is at the heart of nearly every cop show and “kick-ass” movie out today." People who carry for personal protection are not out looking for a fight. Someone could learn one of the many martial arts with the intent of "kicking ass", vs acting responsible with their self defense knowledge. Should karate be banned next as well?

Lastly, there is a very big difference between state violence and personal protection. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars are an abomination, and mass murder funded by taxpayer money founded on lies established by Bush and furthered by Obama. How is this at all similar to a person's 2nd Amendment right to protect themselves from personal harm? Since when is protection escalation? People are fond of shutting down gun stores and picketing in others back yards, such as Philadelphia. Women and folk who live in dangerous communities should be the ones to decide what is an appropriate method of self defense for themselves.

A self defense scenario is costly, both legally and emotionally. As I mentioned before, those who carry a weapon legally are NOT looking for a fight. They will often spend more time and money on training then the average cop (trust me, the police are not as competent with their weapons as one might think). People who exercise their right to concealed carry are RESPONSIBLE law abiding citizens who have gone through the legal process to utilize this right. You think criminals give a damn if handguns are legal or illegal? They are CRIMINALS. People carry weapons because the police cannot be relied on for protection where they live or in their circumstances. We have all heard unfortunate stories of abusive lovers returning to attack or even kill their partner.

If one wants to forgo defending themselves or their loved ones from a violent criminal, that is their choice. But please don't force this ideology on others who perhaps don't follow your logic of *self-defense* as "violence".NRAleftistnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27780484.post-68656716708926414252009-11-08T08:57:28.935-05:002009-11-08T08:57:28.935-05:00Drick,
